  • 2021-11-02 - The 2021 3rd-quarter numbers are in. The Fund's balance dipped slightly to $540,017.55 because of market performance, but it is still almost $30,000 more than the beginning of the year, even after the $20,000 distribution. For details, see the 2021 Quarterly Summary Reports.

  • 2021-10-26 - The 'Beginnings' dropdown in the top navigation bar has been renamed 'About Us', and the latest PDF slide presentation about the Fund has been added to it.

  • 2021-08-17 - Thanks to YMCA Camp Kern for the Kern Fund shout-out in the History Corner section of its recently posted alumni newsletter. The page has been added to the 'In The News' dropdown.

  • 2021-08-04 - The Advisory Board is pleased to present an initial 15-slide PDF presentation summarizing the Fund's purpose, activities, and latest figures. Feel free to share at parties!

  • 2021-07-30 - The 2021 2nd-quarter numbers are in. Even after distributing $20,000 to Kern in June, the Fund's balance increased from $531,392.37 to $543,431.52, thanks to your gifts and a positive market! For details, see the 2021 Quarterly Summary Reports.

  • 2021-07-26 - For the historically-minded, a link to the Cliff Smith YMCA Postcard Collection has been added under 'Other Links'. The collection includes a few Dayton YMCA and Camp Kern postcards.

  • 2021-07-03 - The "FAQs" page now has some content(!). Check it out to see if your favorite question(s) have been answered!

  • 2021-06-02 - The Kern Fund was featured in a May 30th Dayton Daily News advertisement celebrating The Dayton Foundation's 100 Years. A PDF version has been added to the "In the News" dropdown.

  • 2021-05-08 - The 2021 1st-quarter numbers are in. Thanks to an improved investment market and donations received in response to the Annual Report mailing, the Fund's balance as of 3/31 is $531,392.37! For details, see the 2021 Quarterly Summary Reports.

  • 2021-03-08 - Time to remove the Foundation's toll-free number(!) from our site - (877) 222-0410 - as it doesn't seem to appear anywhere on the Foundation's site anymore. A relic of old!

  • 2021-02-12 - The Kern Fund's 2020 Annual Report has been posted online and will also be mailed to around 1,000 individuals.

  • 2021-02-08 - The 2020 year-end numbers are in, and the Fund's balance passed the half-million-dollar mark - $510,659.39!! Thanks to all donors! See the 2020 Quarterly Summary Reports page for additional details.

  • 2021-02-03 - The Dayton Foundation paid tribute to Robert S. Neff, former Dayton Foundation Governing Board Chair who also contributed to The Carl B. Kern Fund and was a long-time supporter of YMCA Camp Kern. Mr. Neff passed away January 18th at age 89.

  • 2020-09-13 - How to put a positive spin on 2020? How about this: a generous donor has made a '20-20' commitment, matching year-end gifts (starting in September) dollar-for-dollar up to $20,000, in the hopes of adding at least an additional $40,000 to the Fund's principal this year...   • 2020-05-02 - An original 1918 Carl B. Kern Tribute Booklet and a 1985 reprint have been re-scanned and can now be seen in higher resolution on a separate page.

  • 2020-04-15 - The 2020 distribution in the amount of $16,000 is being sent to Camp Kern early this year because of The Dayton Foundation's accelerated grant processing schedule and the need to provide funds for camp sooner rather than later given the special circumstances surrounding COVID-19. The total amount distributed to Camp Kern on behalf of the Fund since 1989 is now nearly $197,000.

  • 2020-03-03 - The Dayton Foundation logo has been refreshed with its newer version that was unveiled last fall.

  • 2020-02-07 - The Kern Fund's 2019 Annual Report has been posted online.

  • 2020-02-06 - The 2019 final numbers are in - we had a very good year, with an end-of-year balance of $448,961.20!. Additional details are available on the 2019 Quarterly Summary Reports page.

  • 2019-11-20 - A link to page 4 of The Dayton Foundation's 2018-19 Annual Report, which includes some Kern Fund highlights, has been added to the In the News dropdown on the top navigation bar.

  • 2019-11-17 - The Honorary & Memorial Gifts page has been updated.

  • 2019-10-24 -The 'DONATE!' dropdown on the top navigation bar has been replaced with a DONATE! link which displays a page that describes various options/methods to donate.

  • 2019-09-07 - A List of Donations link for the current year has been added to the Finances dropdown for quicker access to this page.

  • 2019-08-23 - The web site header now displays only the new address for The Dayton Foundation which is moving on Monday August 26th and will be back open for business on Tuesday August 27th.

  • 2019-06-13 - A check for $15,000 was presented to Executive Director Chris Addison at YMCA Camp Kern's annual Strawberries and Ice Cream event, raising the total amount distributed to Camp Kern on behalf of the Fund to nearly $181,000.

  • 2019-01-16 - The order of the Financial Summaries display now begins with the current year and goes backwards to 1987.

  • 2019-01-07 - A link to the Fund's Facebook page has been added to the home page.

  • 2019-01-02 - Donations to the Fund will continue to be matched by the Fund's founder through June of this year, marking the 30th Anniversary of the Fund's first distribution check to Camp Kern. Donors can use a printable form or make a credit card donation online.

  • 2018-12-15 - An additional, sortable 'Donors' column has been added to the Financial Summaries report which counts the number of individual donors each year. There have been many years where one individual/entity has made more than one gift.

  • 2018-11-23 - Profiles have been added for Bob Barr and Bob Salisbury.

  • 2018-11-22 - Want a blast from the past from over 20 years ago? An Older News and Archives link has been added to the bottom of this column which reflects some rather old content (from the now-deleted latenews.htm file)!

  • 2018-09-16 - The Financial Summaries report has been updated so that you can click on a column heading to sort the column; click on it again to reverse sort.

  • 2018-09-14 - 'In The News' was added to the top navigation bar, with links to one Camp Kern article and two Foundation articles, including a Good News article just published.

  • 2018-09-03 - The website has been updated so that all of the links formerly found in the lefthand navigation column can now be found in the top gray navigation bar with dropdowns. This allows for more room to display content in the main section under the navigation bar.

  • 2018-06-14 - A check for $10,000 was presented to Executive Director Chris Addison at YMCA Camp Kern's annual Strawberries and Ice Cream event, raising the total amount distributed to Camp Kern on behalf of the Fund to nearly $166,000.

  • 2018-06-10 - All of the first nine Annual Reports of The Carl B. Kern Fund, covering the years 1988 through 1996, have now been scanned and posted on the Financial Summaries page.

  • 2018-06-04 - The Carl B. Kern section has been greatly expanded to include additional historical historical information. Stay tuned for even more updates and links.

  • 2018-06-03 - A new link called Distinct Donor Surnames has been created to display the names of all of the families who have donated to The Carl B. Kern Fund - many of whom have historical ties to the Dayton YMCA and YMCA Camp Kern.

  • 2017-06-15 - In honor of the Fund's 30 years, it was announced at YMCA Camp Kern's annual Strawberries and Ice Cream event that the next $30,000 in donations to The Carl B. Kern Fund received in the next 3 years, excluding estate gifts, will be matched by the Fund's founder, potentially adding another $60,000 to the Fund's principal. Please check out our Donor Form, where you have an opportunity to make an honorary or memorial gift. It was also announced that an estate gift to The Carl B. Kern Fund in the amount of over $200,000 has been confirmed by The Dayton Foundation, to be received within the next couple of months. Lastly, a call for new members of the Kern Fund Advisory Board is now underway to lead The Carl B. Kern Fund for generations to come. Contact us for additional information.

  • 1997-04-08 - The By-Laws of the Kern Fund Advisory Board are now available on-line. PLUS, the Advisory Board is holding its next meeting on April 22nd, with the preliminary agenda also on-line.

  • 1997-03-08 - 1996 end-of-year figures prepared by The Dayton Foundation and received by the Advisory Board Chair on March 3rd indicate the Fund's market value was $68,472.09 on December 31st. The 1996 Summary Report is now available on-line for your convenience.

  • 1996-11-23 - Statistics for the Three Quarters Ending 9/30/96 are in and available on-line.

  • 1996-10-09 - The Kern Fund Advisory Board will be meeting on October 14th. The agenda has been posted on-line.

  • 1996-09-24 - When Carl B. Kern established YMCA camping in the Dayton area in 1910, he was continuing a tradition that began 25 years earlier in 1885 with the first YMCA camp, Camp Dudley. A listing of YMCA Camps on the Web by Region will enable you to check into YMCA camps all around the world to see how far YMCA camping has come....

  • 1996-08-19 - Statistics for the Two Quarters Ending 6/30/96 are in and available on-line.

  • 1996-05-21 - 1996 1st Quarter Statistics are in and available on-line.

  • 1996-05-09 - Additional financial summaries for 1994, 1993, and 1992 have been posted on-line for your convenience.

  • 1996-02-22 - 1995 end-of-year figures prepared by The Dayton Foundation and received by the Advisory Board Chair on February 22nd indicate the Fund's market value was $59,570.37 on December 31st. The 1995 Summary Report is available on-line for your convenience.

  • 1995-12-19 - Our leaps into World Wide Web technology continue as we have now added the capacity to request information on-line. If you have a "forms-capable" browser (most people do), check out our new Request for Information Form.

  • 1995-12-08 - This is a belated announcement to all who may not be aware that John M. Gogle passed away on October 11th at age 70. Son of Maurice F. Gogle, former General Secretary of the Dayton YMCA, John was a Sponsor of The Carl B. Kern Fund and supported other recent Camp Kern activities including the construction of the Ralph D. Roehm Memorial Cabin in 1992. His sons Tom, Jim, and daughter-in-law Nancy were all staff at Camp Kern.
    The Advisory Board would like to express our most sincere condolences to Mrs. Gogle and the rest of the family.

  • 1995-11-30 - 3rd quarter figures prepared by The Dayton Foundation and received by the Advisory Board Chair on November 17th indicate the Fund's market value was $53,427.34 on September 30th. The Fund continues to benefit from the strong financial market this year, with over $8,000 added to the Fund since January 1st from investment income and market value increases alone. $1,500 in donations have been received in 1995 as the Advisory Board prepares for our year-end giving mailings.

  • 1995-09-21 - 2nd quarter figures prepared by The Dayton Foundation and received by the Advisory Board Chair on August 21st indicate the Fund's market value was $51,161.62 on June 30th. This increase is notable since the $2,600 distribution to Camp Kern was deducted this quarter and there was only $225 in gifts, but investment income made up the difference and then some....

  • 1995-04-21 - The bombing in Oklahoma City has hit home to several friends of The Carl B. Kern Fund who know Dave Larrabee, former Assistant Director at YMCA Camp Campbell Gard of Hamilton, OH who just recently became the Assistant Director at YMCA Camp Classen of Oklahoma City. Dave was sitting in his office at the downtown YMCA when the explosion occurred across the street. He required stitches for cuts to his face but is otherwise doing OK. He reported substantial damage at the Y, including injuries to children at the Y's daycare center. Dave's name is actually listed on the Internet in an Oklahoma posting of Known Hospitalized Survivors.
